“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”
— Ignacio Estrada
I teach the way they learn.
Hi! I’m Kristie! I’m a mom, a wife and a former classroom teacher. I have over 18 years of classroom teaching experience in grades K-6. I have experience teaching general education students and specialize in students with IEPs and learning disabilities. I have a Masters Degree in Elementary Education and hold a current teaching license in Virginia. I love helping students feel confident and accomplished and it’s my goal to create a personalized learning plan that helps your student thrive. I look forward to the opportunity to get to know your child, discover their learning style and help them reach their potential.
I’m Mrs. Herring, your new tutor!
What makes Mrs. Herring’s Schoolhouse Different?
When you partner with me as your tutor, you and your child are getting almost two decades of educational experience on your side. Many larger tutoring services use general systems that can be applied to as many children as possible. This can be helpful as extra practice but rarely addresses a students individual needs and unique challenges. My approach fosters a relationship with the student built on trust. By working with the student one-on one in my home classroom I can adjust interventions and approaches to specifically suit the learner. This approach can also adjust and change with the student as they progress through their school years. I can also discover learning aides, resources and incentives that are tailored to motivate and inspire your student specifically. All of this in my quiet, safe, distraction-free schoolroom in my home equipped with all of the materials and resources for effective and fun learning.

The Schoolhouse
The school in my house. Get it? School-House?
Environment is so important when it comes to optimum learning. That’s why we call it a “learning environment!” My home school room in Alexandria, VA is one of the most beautiful rooms in our house with a massive bay window that lets in plenty of sunshine. Students will be surrounded by plenty of my prized house-plants that help create a calm and soothing atmosphere. I have a teachers desk and cooperation desk where I can work one on one with students. The room is large enough for plenty of breathing room but cozy enough to foster the individual attention that is at the heart of my approach. I also have all of the tools, materials, resources and learning aids that your student will need for a rich and engaging learning experience.
