About Me

Hi! I’m Kristie! I’m a mom, a wife and former classroom teacher! I live in Alexandria with my family and am excited to get to know you and your student!  In my free time I enjoy practicing my hand lettering skills, tending to my ever-growing collection of houseplants and trying out new recipes.

I’m a veteran teacher with over 18 years of classroom teaching experience in grades K-6.  I have experience teaching general education students and specialize in teaching students with IEPs and learning disabilities.  I have a Masters Degree in Elementary Education and hold a current teaching license in Virginia.  Most recently, I taught in Alexandria City Public Schools and have extensive knowledge of the K-6 learning standards.  I’m experienced in reading and math intervention, have been trained in multiple intervention programs and implemented some of the best intervention curriculums in my time in the classroom.

I’ve wanted to be a teacher ever since I was inspired by my own great teachers. After my undergraduate degree at James Madison University, I joined Teach for America Corps as a teacher while simultaneously pursing a Masters in Elementary Education. I moved on to teach at charter schools in Washington D.C. and eventually taught at Alexandria City Public Schools.

Throughout my career my passion has always been connecting with students and discovering unique ways to help them succeed. My greatest satisfaction comes from young faces lighting up with confident smiles when they overcome challenges. I thrive on working individually with students to discover their learning style and to realize their love of learning. When students feel confident and find the fun in learning, they can tackle any challenge their curriculum may present.

And that is why I became a tutor. I want to focus on each student individually and work along side their teachers to give them the skills to approach their learning with confidence, pride and enthusiasm.

It’s really all about the children. Its about their confidence and their overall outlook on education. Success in schoolwork can turn into confidence in their abilities in any area whether it is creative arts or sports. I’ve found this to be true with my students and with my own children.

When you join Mrs. Herring’s Schoolhouse, your child has a caring guide on their side and you, the parents or guardians, have an experienced and trained teacher on your team to navigate your child’s most important education years.
